Kelly Clarkson and Garth Brooks left fans in awe when they teamed up for a stunning duet of Shallow, the chart-topping hit originally performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born.
Back in 2019, Kelly Clarkson surprised the audience at her Meaning of Life tour stop in Green Bay, Wisconsin, with a breathtaking rendition of Shallow. The song, which won both a Grammy and a Golden Globe in 2018, had become an instant classic following its debut in the hit film.
“This chick is amazing,” Clarkson said of Gaga, who co-wrote the song for the romantic drama in which she starred alongside Cooper.
“This song, I love it… I thought she and Bradley Cooper did such an awesome job with this song. It’s called Shallow, and we’re going to do our own version because obviously, I don’t have a Bradley Cooper here.”
Adding a touch of humor before her performance, she quipped, “I hope I don’t suck, and if I do, I hope she doesn’t see it.”
Her powerhouse vocals struck a chord with millions of viewers, with fans flooding the comments with praise.
“She sings it like she wrote it herself!!! Beautiful,” one fan shared on Clarkson’s YouTube video.
“This cover still gives me chills. Simply the best,” another added, while a third joked, “Is there any Grammy category for covers? You did a great job, Kelly.”
A few years later, Garth Brooks stopped by The Kelly Clarkson Show for a jam session, and the conversation naturally turned to Shallow.
Before they sang together, Brooks recalled his own 2020 duet of Shallow with his wife, country star Trisha Yearwood.
“I actually saw y’all do this [on Facebook] – it was live in the moment. You were doing some live thing. Is that how it all started?” Clarkson asked, noting that the song was a highlight on Brooks’ album Fun.
Brooks explained that a fan had requested the duet during one of his Facebook Live sessions, and while he was caught off guard, Yearwood was more than prepared.
“Miss Yearwood knew what she was doing, so I was like, ‘Oh, crap.’ I’d seen the movie – it’s pretty cool,” Brooks said, casually strumming a few notes on his guitar.
Clarkson, clearly a fan of the song, responded enthusiastically. “It invites you in… I love it,” she gushed.
Then, to the delight of everyone in the room, Brooks invited Clarkson to sing with him.
“I would love to hear you sing,” he said.
“I would love to sing it with you. Sorry, Trisha,” Clarkson joked. “You’re not here, and if you were here, I’d sing three-part.”
Their impromptu duet was nothing short of magical. As the two blended their voices, Clarkson’s powerful, soaring vocals intertwined seamlessly with Brooks’ signature storytelling tone. The result was a deeply emotional and raw performance that captivated fans across genres.
After their performance, Brooks turned to the camera and, with a playful grin, addressed his wife. “Miss Yearwood, I didn’t enjoy that,” he said, before turning away and exclaiming, “That was fabulous!”
Fans were quick to praise the duet, highlighting the unique chemistry between the two singers.
“Kelly doesn’t just sing a song; she makes you feel it and understand it,” one fan commented.
“The musical chemistry between Kelly and Garth is off the charts, and I desperately want a real duet single from them,” another added.
“I can sit here and just listen to them sing all day. They are both so talented and have great personalities. This was so much fun to watch!” a third fan wrote.
Another viewer described the performance as “chilling,” saying, “As Garth began, it gave me goosebumps. Kelly came on strong and sounded wonderful. Great duo on a wonderful song. Thanks to you both.”
Clarkson and Brooks’ rendition of Shallow wasn’t just another cover—it was a moment of pure musical magic. Their voices, effortlessly harmonizing, brought a fresh and powerful energy to a song already rich with emotion.
