A transgender fencer, who became embroiled in a controversy over gender participation rules during a USA Fencing-sponsored event, is no longer part of the Wagner College women’s fencing team. This development followed significant debate surrounding the athlete’s participation in the Cherry Blossom Open in Maryland.
Wagner College confirmed to Fox News Digital that Redmond Sullivan was removed from the team more than a week after the incident at the tournament. The controversy arose when Stephanie Turner, a fellow competitor, refused to compete against Sullivan, protesting against USA Fencing’s policies on transgender athletes.
Redmond Sullivan had been competing for Wagner College’s women’s team in foil competitions throughout the first half of the 2024-25 season. Previously, Sullivan had been a member of the men’s team during the 2023-24 season, as reflected in the scoresheets from that time.
The NCAA had updated its policy on transgender athletes following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, titled the “No Men in Women’s Sports” order. This policy stated that athletes assigned male at birth are not permitted to compete on women’s teams.
At the Cherry Blossom Open, Turner took a stand by kneeling in protest against Sullivan’s inclusion in the competition. She voiced her disapproval of USA Fencing’s transgender participation policies, emphasizing the importance of addressing gender differences in sports. Turner expressed her views to Fox News Digital, highlighting her commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of women and girls, which she felt were compromised by the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Despite the controversy, USA Fencing has stood by its policies regarding transgender athletes. Following the event, Sullivan’s club team, Iconic Fencing Club, issued a statement in support of Sullivan. They affirmed that Sullivan had adhered to all rules and guidelines set by the FIE and USA Fencing, asserting her right to compete in events for which she qualifies.
The club emphasized that fencing is a sport deeply rooted in values of honor, sportsmanship, inclusion, and respect. They condemned the actions of Turner, stating that such behavior has no place in the sport. Iconic Fencing Club reiterated their support for Sullivan and committed to backing her in her fencing endeavors moving forward.
